Len Snowdon - Case Study
Len Snowdon has been travelling from Australia to Dorset Orthopaedic since 2004 to receive bespoke silicone cosmeses. Following a train accident in 1992, Len lost most of his right arm as well as his right leg and hip. After rehabilitation, he returned to work and continued to lead an active life, but he was never fully satisfied with the cosmetic appearance of his prostheses.
After researching alternative options with his wife, Carol, Len discovered Dorset Orthopaedic and arranged his first appointment. Since then, he has continued to make the journey from Australia to receive replacement silicone cosmeses, describing them as the best cosmetic prostheses available.
During Len's most recent visit, he attended a colour match appointment where measurements and alginate impressions were taken to accurately capture the shape and characteristics of his limb. His skin tone was matched in detail, and features such as freckles, moles, veins, hair and nail characteristics were recorded to ensure the finished prosthesis reflected his natural appearance.
Test pieces were then produced to assess fit and comfort before the final prosthesis was manufactured. A bespoke cast was created from Len's measurements and impressions, allowing the team to accurately sculpt his silicone cosmesis.
Different thicknesses and grades of silicone were used throughout the prosthesis to create a solution that was durable and suitable for everyday wear. Skin tones, freckles, moles, veins and tan lines were recreated by hand, while individual hairs were added to create realism. Any tattoos could also be incorporated and permanently embedded within the silicone.
Throughout manufacture, Len was involved in reviewing the cosmetic appearance of his prosthesis, allowing fine details to be refined before completion. This collaborative approach ensured the finished result accurately reflected his expectations and personal appearance.
For Len, the most important aspect is the realism. Recreating the subtle characteristics of his natural limb helps ensure the finished cosmeses feel personal and authentic. The result is a highly realistic appearance that supports the active lifestyle he has maintained since his accident.
Today, Len continues to dedicate his time to supporting others through volunteer work and amputee mentoring, sharing his experiences and encouraging people to adapt to life after limb loss. His longstanding relationship with Dorset Orthopaedic reflects the importance of a bespoke silicone cosmesis that is carefully crafted to meet his individual needs.
